This article focuses on the digital divide (socially) between Generation M and teachers today. Students, known as 'Generation M' are capable of multi-tasking and are media savvy and have adapted to technologies in the world around us today. While students are digitally able to make videos, use computers and navigate around social networking systems, they are not able to incorporate computers and technology in a productive method for school usage (i.e. correct grammar usage and even writing a paper correctly.)
Based on the “Information and Communication Technology Literacy Test” made by ETS, it was found that few students displayed key information literacy skills or show mastery of higher-order rhetorical skills, which is worrying as this is a key component of essay writing skills. This is because instructors are trying to incorporate technology into their pedagogy, but have not researched what sites actually have on them today.
As a future teacher, do you see using computers and technology within classrooms a beneficial process, or something that could actually take away from lessons within your class?

As a future teacher I feel it is important to incorporate some form of technology into the classroom because it has become a major part of life for the students. The teachers job should be to incorporate technology in a productive way, that allows the students to learn new things.
ReplyDeleteI believe that computers can be an extremely useful tool in the classroom but definitely need to be limited. Too often students rely on computers instead of actually learning material. I've noticed that because of spell check I am a much worse at spelling than ever before because I never need to actually learn it.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the problems students are having with literacy in general need to be addressed; however it should not take away from utilizing technology in the classroom. The more ways we can involve students with technology today, the easier they will be able to adapt to future technology. This is also an important opportunity to encourage creativity in the classroom through an electronic medium.
ReplyDeleteI feel that computers and technology can be an extremely effective tool as long as it is used properly and fosters learning. I definitely will use technology in my classroom. Especially since most students are interested in technology, it will help keep them involved in your class.

I think using technology in the classroom is extremely important as teachers. There are so many more opportunities available to you with the internet and other technologies as a resource. That being said, there is also a point where traditional pedagogy is important where applicable. You can't learn certain things through technology, some things require real life hands on activities. It is important for teachers to find a good balance.
ReplyDeleteAs a future teacher, i do see myself using computers and technology within my classroom. I think that it is a beneficial process because computers and technology are a huge part of our world and always will be. If the students don't learn how to use technology in school, how will they learn it. There are beneficial ways to use technology in the classroom. I will always make sure the technology that I use is used in a beneficial way.
ReplyDeleteComputers can be a useful tool, but there is always the possibility that students will abuse the privilege, so as teachers we need to be caution and with-it as to what is happening in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI can see myself using computers and Internet in my classroom. I feel that many children today use these new technologies in their everyday life all the time. I feel that they would learn more if they could use these technologies in the education, as well as their everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI see using computers and other technology as completely beneficial as long as it is used properly. There are plenty of ways that teachers can integrate computers and technology to make their lessons more exciting. If the lesson is more exciting it will probably be remembered.
ReplyDeleteComputers are beneficial. Writing essays is an important skill. But computers also allow students to easily display information in other ways using audio and visual tools. Multimedia presentations are also an important skill.
ReplyDeleteComputers can be both beneficial and crippling. As a teacher it is important that I know how to use the computer to do the assignments that I want my students to accomplish. If I notice that students are having trouble with spelling and grammar, we may have to step away from technology for a short while to go back to basics, then learn how to aid ourselves with the computer.
ReplyDeleteI feel technology in the classroom is a great thing as long as there are limits set to how much and in what ways it is used. I feel that teachers should not use technology so they don't have to teach as much, it should only be used as a suplament to teaching.
ReplyDeleteI think that using computers and other technology is a great asset in the classroom. I don't think that it takes away from other lessons, but that teachers need to incorporate the use of technology in their lessons. Technology should help students build on their skills, not inhibit them. Also students need to be knowledgable about the latest technology, since it will prepare them for the real world. However, I think that in some instances old school teaching is the only way to go.
